Live Review for Purple Revolver: Sleigh Bells @ The Shipping Forecast

>> So I've tested the grounds of The Shipping Forecast, our new supposedly 'hip' venue on Slater St and replacement for Flares. 

Conclusion? It's quite cozy and familiar there. Feels like a B-version of the old Korova. Compact, a bit pub-like menu with a variety of medium - nd high-profile gigs on every month. They're also hosted some of the Sound City 2010 gigs with leads me to my latest blurbs about the Sleigh Bells gig last Thursday. 

Here's the review for all those of you who missed it. A real shame!

 

Live Review for Purple Revolver: The Slits @ The Masque

>> Apologies for the lack of posts during the last three weeks, but I've been very busy with my dissertation and will be until July - so please be patient and check regularly for news. 

However, Liverpool Sound City 2010 is coming up soon & I'm getting ready to scribble. 

Last week I had the pleasure to review The Slits' gig @ Masque Loft for Purple Revolver.

Travelling Canada with Jack & Meg White.. Next Wednesday @ Parr Street Studios

>> If I ever was to win somewhat six-figure sum in the lottery (which is never going to happen, we all know that, but let's just pretend I would), I'd most likely travel Canada. 

If I ever got to choose a dude to accompany me (apart from the boyfriend, of course), it'd have to be a guitar-plucking dude with a rather chilled out, blunt, eccentric persona...

Maybe someone like Jack White from The White Stripes... 

As for Meg - here passion and genuineness work via the unspoken word... and do succeed. Seemingly simplistic, pounding drum beats underpinning Jack's sometimes almost torturous, infinite range of guitar riffs musically highlight the closeness and familiarity between the former couple, which adds a unique, intimate element to their on-stage appearance and sound. 

 

Having listened to The White Stripes since their breakthrough in 2002, I still don't seem to truly get them. To me, their personalities just as well as their music are intertwined and multiple-layered in more than binary-coded way. Every time I seem to come close to thinking "I know what Jack was on about when he wrote this song", I bounce back into my corner of nescience. And yet, I'm still not be able to resist and fall back into their clutches made of uncompromising existentialist lyrics and their unvarnished, pulsing, sheer elusive musicality.

Back in the day, the duo's distinctively, deliberate stage outfits triggered hotheaded debates in an industry that majorly builds its success on stylised appearances rather than on anything else. The White Stripes' unifying, carefully elaborated punk-meets-minimalist fashion sense, on the other hand, implied and doubtlessly inflamed a counter movement to the brand-controlled mainstream consumer culture. 

 

Luckily, Purple Revolver, Über & Parr Street Studios have decided to screen The White Stipes' own 92-min-rock-documentary, painting an exclusive picture of Jack & Meg's lives on tour with their crew, fans and each other. Whereas it was playing only one song a small Canadian town or ruling the big stage in Toronto - the unvarnished footage of "Under Great White Northern Lights" - just like their music - restates the band's image once again.

Album Review: We Have Band / ‘We Have Band’ (Naïve) by The Fly Magazine

>> According to Fly Magazine's latest album review, great things are yet to be expected from We Have Band. And as fate willed, We Have Band are going to perform at The Kazimier tomorrow night! Check back with the "Easter Highlights & More" post for more details on tickets & times. (The supporting acts will include Indica Ritual!). 

'In the midst of 2009’s electro onslaught, We Have Band almost seemed like an industry joke: three former EMI employees so Shoreditch they could have fallen out of Nathan Barley here to prove how the only things you really need to succeed are a few contacts and a suitably asymmetric haircut. Of course though, they were always much more than that and, a sensible gap year later, they’ve returned with an album that shows just what a force they really are. Opener ‘Piano’ comes on like a drug-fuelled, hazy fairground ride, ‘Divisive’ fills the genius void between New Order and Chew Lips, whilst ‘Oh!’ is a strutting reminder of what made us prick up our ears originally. EMI’s loss is definitely our gain.'

I'm With The Band... Pamela Des Barres

Hallelujah! I've already spread the news on Facebook earlier on, but please give me a moment to emphasise why this is a memorable day.

One of the most influential, detailed books written on the florescence of Classic Rock, namely

Pamela Des Barres' memoir: 

'I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie'

is finally going to be made into a comedy-drama (starring Zooey Dechannel), produced by the U.S. TV network giant HBO. 

If you haven't read, or heard about it, now is your time to take action and get a keen insight into the 'Golden Years of Rock'n'Roll. 

Pamela Des Barres, often referred to as the 'supergroupie', reveals unvarnished, truthful stories about her legendary life as Jimmy Pages' long-term girlfriend, Frank Zappa's nanny, her adventurous travels to England where she 'met' Mick Jagger or Led Zeppelin, attended dinner parties with Deborah Bonham, The Beatles and Eric Clapton, as well as Pamela's final pursuit of happiness with her current husband Michael Des Barres. 

As usual, book containing such 'provocative material' has be strongly criticised due to its sexual contents as well as Pamela Des Barres' legitimisation of nymphomania, drug abuse (though only during that particular period of time), or the strong language. To be blunt: Maybe those (mainly U.S.) critics were simply 'too sweet for rock and roll.' 

'I'm With The Band: Confessions of a Groupie' (1st ed. 1987) - a witty, yet raw rock anthem. 

Let's hope that HBO decides to shoot the film at the original UK locations.

Completely Captivated by... CHEW LiPS

Admitted. My brain feels smashed today. My last week of marathon-gig-watching seems to demand its tribute, but nevermind...  This isn't going to hold me back from giving you my newest blurbs on one of this week's absolute highlights and most likely our last 'affordable' chance to see this perform before goes MAJOR!

Newly hatched on 24th January 2010, CHEW LiPS' brand-new album 'Unicorn'( by Family) has made a dramatic entrée in this week's iTunes Album Charts, currently positioning itself on No. 20. 

 

'Unicorn' truly speaks up to its name, opening a door to CHEW LiPS' ultrasonic universe with its avant-garde minimal tunes underlined by subtle pop beats as well as classic elements, framed by Tigs' edgy, yet intriguing vocals, like in 'Play Together' (released on 18th January 2010).

Piano Song, on the contrary, completely captivates one's senses with its beautiful, mellow piano arrangements and Trig's powerful, multifarious voice. 

Ranging from edgy basslines, twitched string sounds to classic drumbeat and 80s synthesiser elements, CHEW LiPS 10-track-album is a masterpiece, destined for timelessness and yet, truly capturing today's Zeitgeist.

Melting the Ice with Miike Snow

As promised earlier gig lovers won't come short in 2010. Starting out this month with one of the most buzzed-about newcomer bands of last year, 

Miike Snow

The Swedish trio (Andrew Wyatt/Christian Karlsson/Pontus Winnberg) was formed in 2007, but its members have ruled the industry for a while. Karlsson and Winnberg collaborated as Bloodshy & Avant on tracks with Madonna, Sugababes, Kelis, Passion Pit, Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend and many more... 

The hype about Miike Snow started with the release of their first track 'Animal' (10/08/09) that had been aired on the American series Gossip Girl beforehand. Finally, on 12th May 2009 their self-titled debut album 'Miike Snow' (Downtown Records) hit the Swedish record stores followed by a global release (Sony Entertainment) on 23rd October 2009.

'It's intelligent pop music that has the ability to cradle taste-making purists and reach anthemic heights.' (Guardian.co.uk)

The album offers an eclectic mixture of fragile, subtle Electropop tunes, which are most likely to be compared to a-ha or Animal Collective. Miike Snow, however, stands out with its elaborate concept of melancholic, thrilling experimental arrangements painting the cool landescape of Scandinavia.

Whoever said that the good old children's-choir-meets-a-classical-orchestra soundtrack belongs to anyone's Christmas CD collection like socks aside the chimney turned on the wrong channel. Wake up! Christmas doesn't need to be silent. I mean, what does your Christmas soundtrack include? My first track would most definitely be:
